Tinnitus

Tinnitus can be brought on by a many factors. Damage exposure to loud noises most common,
but tinnitus can also be caused by earwax buildup, head & neck injuries, stress, allergies or
conditions like meniere’s disease. These factors come into play when managing tinnitus:

Medications – Common drugs that cause tinnitus depend on the disease or disorder being
treated, most are antibiotics, antidepressants and cardiac meds. In most cases, tinnitus and
hearing loss from ototoxic meds are short-term, and returns to normal after discontinued use.
However, some can lead to more long-term or permanent damage, especially at high dosages.
Common meds that are known to cause symptoms include (but not limited to, due to character
limit):

  • Antibiotics used for severe bacterial infections, pneumonia, sinusitis, & bronchitis, and UTIs.
  • Aspirin & other NSAIDs at high doses.
  • Antidepressants for depression, chronic pain, and migraine prevention.
  • Meds for lowering blood pressure.
  • Benzos for anxiety.
  • Pills for severe acne.
  • Atorvastatin (Lipitor) for lowering cholesterol.

Other factors in lifestyle factors that could impact tinnitus:


Caffeine instake – Caffeine is responsible for reducing blood flow, and worsening existing cases
of tinnitus.

Salt consumption – Too much salt may raise blood pressure, stimulating the flow of blood to the
ears and head, causing tinnitus.


A number of supplements can aid in the management of tinnitus. Commonly cited supplements
include: Vitamin A, Thiamine, Niacin, Vitamin B12, Magnesium, Zinc, Manganese, Chromium,
L-Arginine HCl, N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine, Ginko Biloba, and more.

Some notable, scientifically backed supplements are cited and explained below:

  • Gingko Biloba – helps the blood flow to the head to increase, stimulating nerves in the ears and
    helping to prevent tinnitus.
  • Manganese – Manganese deficiency has been associated with numerous ear disorders.
  • Vitamin E – Increases blood circulation, which is often inadequate in people with tinnitus and
    hearing loss.
  • Magnesium – May give relief from tinnitus.

Dietary supplements should be used with caution and with the supervision of a healthcare professional.
